It shouldn’t be a big surprise to you that your iPhone 3G is capable of acting as a personal pedometer for you. If you are planning to get fit by walking around every day, you can use your iPhone to track your number of steps and find out whether you are burning enough energy to lose weight. All you have to do is the right pedometer iPhone application to get you started.
Here are 8 best pedometer applications for iPhone:

1. iTreadmill: the best pedometer available on iTunes. You can also use it to have your virtual treadmill. A must own. You can use it practically in any situation. Very innovative.

2. My Weight Loss Coach: a comprehensive solution for anyone hoping to lose weight. Not only acts as a pedometer, it helps you get on the right track and stay on it too.

3. Jogalot: your personal pedometer on iPhone. Tells you how long you have been walking, the number of steps you have taken, and estimated burned calorie.

4. iSteps: iSteps is a wonderful iPhone application that makes losing weight more fun. Whether you are just trying to hit 10,000 steps or go beyond 15,000, iSteps is a handy app to have with you.

5. Distance Meter Pro: whether you want to go biking or running, this app will track your activity and help you stay on the right track.

6. RunningKeeper: another decent pedometer application for iPhone and iPod Touch. Very simple and straight forward. Pretty accurate and gets the job done.

7. iWalk: another simple application to count your steps. It supports metric system as well.

8. Go Walk Pedometer: another simple step counter that tells you how many calories you are burning during your workout sessions.
With these pedometer apps, you will never have to walk without knowing how much energy you are burning or whether you are hitting your exercise targets.
Your take: which pedometer app are you using on your phone?

A perfect example of why 48 hour trials should be required for iPhone software. How else to evaluate?? Two or three sentence reviews don’t cut it.

You are right
We probably should do a better job putting apps together but you could imagine that these pieces could get long as sometimes we have 20, 30 or more apps in our lists. I know we have some in our upcoming lists. But I have tried all of the apps, and I use the first one myself.

i would like to know more & more application of pedometer in our daily life.

In this accelerating rate of application submission on the App Store, the list should be updated more often.
Check this for example Playing Pedometer

How about some useful information like how do they work differently? Do they all use the same stride length estimate for walking and running?
#6CyrusDecember 1, 2009, 11:27 pm
You are right. It’s in the works.

If you want to track your steps during the day-as opposed to during a dedicated workout-can any of these apps handle it? Also, if these apps can track all your steps during the day, will they absolute kill battery life?

@chels I know what you mean, its hard to find good help these days. People now days just don’t have the work ethic they used to have. I mean consider whoever wrote this post, they must have been working hard to write that good and it took a good bit of their time I am sure. I work with people who couldn’t write like this if they tried, and getting them to try is hard enough as it is.

Thanks for taking time to look at these. I’ve been trying to find a good pedometer that also shows calories burned. Sadly, almost all of these are butt-ugly! Can’t believe there’s not a better looking interface.
Best regards,
DK

is there a daily step pedometer that automatically records daily walks like my phons before the i-phone…the sony erickson? that is what I am looking for. I don't want to have to stop everyday and set it up. I want to know what my steps are and calories burned from the time I get up that morning until I go to bed at night.
#11JanineNovember 15, 2010, 4:45 pm
Johna I am also a former Sony Erikson user and would like the same functionality on my iphone. Should be possible… Anyone know a solution?
#12laylaJanuary 26, 2011, 9:05 am
This is exactly what I'm looking for. I had a sony ericsson walkman phone before which counted my daily steps each day. I didn't have to turn it on every morning like the one i have to do on my iphone now. which is a pain. and it doesn't seem to work in the background either. sigh..
#13JEMNovember 24, 2011, 12:18 pm
I agree! Im in the same boat- that was my favorite part about my Sony, and I wish this so called Smart phone would have the capability to do the same!

Was there a comparison of pedometers concerning accuracy? Or which one counted properly for both walking and running?
#15Keke EMay 12, 2010, 5:31 pm
Nothing positive here… don’t like it… go buy the old fashioned pedometer that fastens to your belt!

Have to update the post. There are some very good new ones in iTunes
#17VikiMay 25, 2010, 1:08 pm
Cyrus, I used your list to find the one pedometer for me. I’ve chosen iWalk but also use the other one called All-In Fitness Pedometer. It really covers everything I can imagine.

Great. Thanks for the tip. That piece needs an update
#19Michael BJune 28, 2010, 8:15 am
Surprised you didn't check to see if any of these use the GPS function of the iPhone; I could care less how many steps I take, I want to know how far I walked. Being able to map it would be a bonus.
#20CyrusJune 28, 2010, 4:26 pm
Michael. The piece is a bit old. We are in the process of updating it. Sorry.
#21DoreenJanuary 29, 2012, 9:18 pm
Michael, there are 2000 steps in 1 mile. I hope this helps….
#22LowellJuly 12, 2010, 12:02 pm
Do any of these apps run in the background on the iPhone 3G? All I need is distance and possibly steps, but they need to keep running while I am active, whether it be listening to music or on the phone.
#23Jim RJuly 15, 2010, 12:41 am
Re: GPS functionality, I’d like to know my vertical as well as horizontal distance. It’s hilly where I live.
#24LaNetaAugust 17, 2010, 3:01 am
My ? is the same as Lowell's in a sense and Jim R's. I want to know how far when I am finished running with my iphone, I need to listen to music at the same time. Does this happen? If so what app is best for this? Thank you for your time.

Are there pedometer apps that track your path via GPS?
#26CyrusNovember 7, 2010, 12:30 pm
you mean something like iRunner?
#27Maree AOctober 25, 2010, 9:12 pm
My question is the same as Lowell's – just need a pedometer to run in the background measuring steps taken, and not interfering with normal phone function, music, talking books etc.
#28CyrusNovember 7, 2010, 12:32 pm
@Maree Something like this? http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cal-meter-2/id3793…

I’ve started using RunKeeper Pro – it was free in January, may be free again soon. Does GPS tracking for distance (not sure about elevation, sorry), good web page integration, etc. What I am looking for is a way to track steps, weight, blood pressure, etc. Not a measurement device like a pedometer (got those), just a data entry/tracking app. Ideas?

The new iFootpath App – iFootpath Mobile has just been launched. It has lots of new features including walks to download, GPS tracking on walk maps as well as the ability to create tracks and walks from the App. It's free at the moment but this is likely to change. The website is

and the itunes link is

There is a new forum on the iFootpath website if you want to post up some comments. The website is

well, I'm using Pedometer Ultimate GPS +. I consider it best app for tracking my route and it is also available to set daily goals. but the most prominent thing is that it's free and has all option that you need: compitability with sensors(sensors and adapter by 60beat, Wahoo Fitness or Runalyzer), route map, STUNNING MAP,ANNOUNCEMENTS, DAILY GOAL, ELEVATION TRACKING. And after I can share my achievments by Twitter, Facebook, Dailymile, email or SMS!
Pedometer Ultimate GPS + worth it!

I prefer the StepMetr Pedometer application. It's only $0.99 and the UI is really simple and slick.
#35haroldDecember 6, 2011, 12:52 am
just got an iPhone, i want a pedometer app but i don't like estimated step length option, i walk differently depending how tired i am, if I'm walking level, up or down hills. is there an app that measures your distance by gps. can i record my path and back track if i need to? if you are in a foreign country is it like being on a phone call?
#36SouravJanuary 3, 2012, 2:33 pm
I am really skeptical about these apps. Can anyone tell me how accurate these are, since pedometers by themselves are most of the times inaccurate?
#37CyrusJanuary 3, 2012, 4:51 pm
This list does need some updating but pedometer apps are getting pretty accurate. Not 100% but getting close
#38SouravJanuary 4, 2012, 4:54 am
Thanks. I might just try some out. Will let you know the results.

Jesus, people – get the Nike+GPS app. Done.
