Garmin has finally released its iPhone application to the market. For a while, the company went with its own phones to challenge other mobile GPS solutions on the market. Garmin Streetpilot for iPhone gives Garmin the chance to go head to head with TomTom and Magellan GPS apps for iOS.

Garmin Streetpilot should have a familiar look and feel for those of you who have owned Garmin products in the past. For starters, it has up to date maps to help you get to your destination without getting lost. StreetPilot provides you with turn by turn directions. Street names are pronounced which helps.

Here are some of the other features included in StreetPilot:

Multi-tasking on iOS 4

Local search

Real-time traffic updates

Lane assistance with junction view

Weather conditions

Speed limits for major roads

If you are not familiar with Garmin products, you will still find the interface to be easy to figure out. Its 2D and 3D maps can help you find your way around more conveniently.

SteetPilot has a lot of potential. Garmin is always known for having some of the best GPS devices on the market. The maps do seem to be over 3G only. Let’s hope Garmin addresses that situation in the future. Good start but needs a bit of work.

If you want to approach fitness the scientific way, you are going to need to keep track of important metrics such as distance, time, and speed. With Kinetic you can do that and much more.

Kinetic does have a very intuitive interface. It is developed to be highly customizable (even its look and feel can be customized). It has multiple training plans to help you stay on track and get your body in a better shape. Kinetic supports distance and time-based goals, so you won’t be exercising without a real goal.

Kinetic displays time, distance, speed, altitude, and maps. It offers a compass feature too which is nice. Want to customize it to fit your needs? You are covered there as well.

If you are planning to lose weight and need a sport GPS, Kinetic should help you out. It’s easy to use and gets the job done.

Who needs a golf GPS when you can use your iPhone (and a decent Golf gps application) to take your game to the next level. A PhiGolf NAVI is one of those apps. It’s a golf GPS app with augmented reality that covers plenty of courses and helps you make better decisions when playing golf outdoors.

A PhiGolf NAVI has over 30K mapped courses. It shows you your distance to green. That includes horizontal distance in addition to elevation differences. The app is pretty flexible and can show your distance from any target.

A PhiGolf NAVI can keep track of your scores. You can record your scores and save shot counts. The shot tracker is pretty nice too. Its maps are pretty useful, especially if you want to get a better sense of what you are dealing with on your course.

A PhiGolf NAVI is a pretty decent rangefinder for iPhone. The fact that you don’t have to spend $300 or so on yet another device when you can use this app to turn your iPhone into a rangefinder is its strongest point.

We all remember when the first few iPhone navigation apps were released to the market. A lot of people complained about the high price tags of these apps. After all, if you are going to pay $100 for a navigation solution, you might as well go for the hardware too. Thanks to Navigon MyRegion, you can get your hands on a powerful iPhone GPS solution without breaking the bank.

Navigon MyRegion comes with regional maps but it gives you the opportunity to upgrade and get more maps. This app has some of the best graphics around. It’s reality view is quite useful if you don’t know your way around. With Lane Assistant, you will never miss your exit again. Text to speech instructions are provided too.

Navigon MyRegion works hand in hand with your operating system to help you get direct access to your contacts when using this app. Google Local Search and pedestrian navigation are positives too.

If you are planning to pick this app up, make sure you pick the version that fits your needs. Here are your options:

MyRegion U.S. West

MyRegion U.S. East

MyRegion U.S. Central

The good new is these apps are much more affordable, and you can upgrade at any time. Great app to ditch your standalone GPS unit for.

The GPS technology has made this world of ours pretty small. Nowadays, you can take advantage of this technology to find your way around any place, find your friends, and keep track of your belongs too. GPS Tracking is a cool iPhone app that lets you keep track of your friends and family members at all times. So whether you are a parent worried about your child or just want to find out whether your best friend is in town, GPS Tracking has you covered.

The app quite easy to work with. All you have to do is a couple of taps and you are on your way to finding out where your friends are. Of course, they can also request your information. As you as your friends approve your request, they’ll show up on your map. So technically, you are still in control of whether you want others to know where you are.

GPS Tracking is integrated with Facebook and Twitter. So you can always take advantage of the app to share your location with your Twitter followers and Facebook friends. The app also gives you multiple options when it comes to viewing your maps, so you’ll have an easier time finding your way to your friends.

GPS Tracking is not for everyone. Those who care more about their privacy and do not want anyone to be able to track their location may want to look for other apps. But if you are OK with it, and your friends are OK with it, there is no reason you should not use this app.

Apple iPhone has enabled many companies to bring their business on board and provide more value to iPhone owners. Smart companies such as Magellan have realized the potential that the iPhone business offers them, which is they have introduced their own apps for iPhone. Magellan Roadmate 2010 is an innovative GPS application for iPhone that transform your iPhone into a super Magellan GPS. So you won’t have to worry about taking an additional gadget with you on the road only for navigation purposes.

Magellan has some of the best standalone GPS devices on the market, so our expectations were very high when testing this app (full disclosure: we were provided a copy for testing purposes). Let’s take a close look at what Roadmate 2010 has to offer:

Interface:

Magellan Roadmate 2010 comes with an interface that is very familiar for those who have used Magellan products in the past. The interface is very intuitive, which means you don’t have to jump through hoops to find things to do in your GPS app. Adding destination addresses, customizing navigation features, and enjoying what your iPhone has to offer while navigating couldn’t be any easier.

Magellan’s OneTouch Favorites Menu makes the process of choosing your destination and finding your way to it much easier. Just add your favorite places and let Magellan do the rest. The address book integration was very handy. You an navigate to your contacts’ information save on your iPhone with a touch of a button. I also liked the QuickSpell entry feature as it saves you time typing those long addresses on your phone.

Navigation:

There are a lot of apps that come with decent looks but don’t deliver in the end. Magellan Roadmate is not one of those apps. It provides you with tons of features to stay on the right track on the road. Magellan’s algorithms are legendary. So you’ll never end up in no man’s land as long as you have Magellan on your iPhone. Thanks to Lane Assistance, you’ll stay on the right lane and get to your destination faster as well.

The 3D landmarks that you get with this app are useful as well. They certainly make navigating on your iPhone more realistic. The app comes with a Pedestrian mode as well, so you can get directions when you are on foot. You can even use the app to find your way back to your car (“Find Your Car” feature).

Our Test:

We were provided with a copy to test Roadmate 2010. Magellan Roadmate 2010 is very strong when it comes to its navigation algorithm. The app can get you out of trouble without giving you “U-Turn” directions like some other apps though. The maps are up to date too. The app never crashed on us. So it’s pretty solid in that department as well. It does seem that the developers have put a lot of effort forward to ship this app bug free (unlike a few other top GPS apps).

All in all, Magellan Roadmate 2010 is a powerful iPhone app that puts a lot of standalone GPS devices to shame. It’s not only accurate and easy-to-use, but it’s also ready for prime time from the get go. If you need a GPS, Roadmate 2010 is a good option to consider.

App Rating: 9/10

Update: Magellan Kit hands on

The Magellan experience wouldn’t be complete without testing Magellan GPS kit for iPhone, which is why we had to test it to find out how good it is (thanks to Magellan for providing us with a review unit). The kit is designed for both iPod Touch and iPhone. Those who happen to own an iPhone can install the app and navigate on their phone on the go. But if you own a current generation iPod Touch, you are out of luck. That’s where Magellan Premium Car kit for iPhone comes in handy. Not only it allows you to work with Magellan Roadmate 2010 on your iPod Touch, it also works with other GPS apps as well.

The kit comes with everything you need to transform your iPhone or iPod Touch into a GPS. You get a windshield mount, an adhesive disc, and auto adapter to keep your device charged on the go. The assembly is very straight forward, so you won’t even have to look at the guide to figure out how to put the mount together.

The mount was more solid that I imagined. When you lock your phone in, it doesn’t move around, and you won’t have to worry about your device falling off when you are driving. I had a few concerns before testing this mount that turned out to be non-issues. The mount is flexible enough to let you mount your phone even when it’s inside a case (as long as it’s not too thick). I also thought that the connector could break easily. But that turned out not to be the case as it’s flexible and gives you room to maneuver.

I used an iPod Touch to test this mount out to figure out what it’s really capable of. By my calculation, it took my iPod 5 seconds to get connected with the satellites and get my positioning. The voice instructions were what I expected and more. While a lot of GPS units on the market provide you with only one direction at a time, Magellan GPS sometimes provides you with more than that. So you know your immediate next steps (turns). The speaker’s sound quality was clear. You can always turn the sound up if you need it. The mount itself is pretty flexible. You can view your iPhone in portrait or landscape mode. The speakerphone can be quite handy as well if you want to go hands-free with your iPhone.

All in all, Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone is an all around solid accessory for any iPhone or iPod Touch owner. If you happen to own an iPod Touch and want to find out what you have been missing with all those navigation apps available on iTunes, Magellan Premium Car Kit is just what you need. I would have loved it if this GPS kit worked without the car adapter as well, but the price would have probably been higher. Considering the fact that this car kit makes it much easier to dump your old standalone GPS, it’s a good investment to make.

Kit Rating: 8.6/10

It’s no news that Apple has made many changes to iPhone 3GS to enhance its capabilities and open it to a new wave of innovative apps. iPhone GPS apps are very popular these days, and they are improving so fast. If you don’t believe me, you’ve got to try MobileNavigator which can be a big game changer in the world of GPS. MobileNavigator sets the bar high by transforming iPhone into a fully-fledged GPS system with all the cool features we have come to expect from top GPS gadgets (e.g. 3D reality view). No longer can you give Apple a hard time for not having a good GPS app available on iTunes.

MobileNavigator’s interface looks awfully close to what we have seen on Navigon GPS systems. But you don’t have to spend $300 or more to get it. And you won’t have to worry about carrying an extra device with you at all times. All you got to do is set up the program on your device and start navigating. With Navigon’s accurate directions, you won’t have to worry about ever getting lost again.

MobileNavigator comes with the latest maps from NAVTEQ and can be used without an Internet connection, so Navigon has got your back even when you don’t have access to the Internet. The graphics are very impressive and the voice directions are very clear. With the 3D reality view, you can easily find your way around and stay on the right track. Besides, the graphics are impeccable which means you won’t get confused about which road to take when you are on the move.

Reality View, Lane Assistant Pro, and Speed Assistant are all great features that will help you save money and get the most out of your driving experience. Reality View makes it so easy to follow directions on the map. You can also see the signposts on your phone, which is quite useful. Speed Assistant is very useful as well as it helps you stay below the speed limit and avoid those speeding tickets.

We have heard a lot about how the GPS business is in trouble, and why wouldn’t be with apps like these. Forget personal navigation devices. MobileNavigator is all you need to navigate your way around your city and get to your destination without a hitch. With its stunning graphics, accurate directions, and a wealth of useful features for drivers, MobileNavigator is nothing but a smash hit.

The GPS technology has changed the way people exercise these days. There was a time when you had to rely on “ancient” technology to track your workouts and measure your progress. But these days, outdoors GPS solutions help you track your workout and the factors, helping you gain a better understanding on what you need to do to take your workout to the next level and add some variety to it. Thanks to the iPhone platform and apps such as AllSports, you can now enjoy those benefits on your phone as well.

AllSport GPS is an innovative iPhone app that helps you keep track of your workouts in all situations. Whether you are taking a walk, biking, hiking, or running in the woods, you can rely on AllSport GPS to track your routes and find out how much more you need to do to meet your daily goal. The app lets you map your workout on phone as well, which helps you figure out where you are and how far you have come.

AllSport GPS is designed for those who want to dig deep and track factors that can affect their daily workout. The log workout is very impressive as well, making it easy to organize your workout files. I also love the fact that there is a community aspect to this app as you can share your routes with your colleagues and other community members. You can also download maps and routes to your iPhone for future workouts.

Overall, AllSport GPS is a wonderful app that turns your iPhone into an outdoors GPS. It helps you keep track of your workout at all times (doesn’t need you to keep your iPhone on and drain your battery either). It also makes it easy to share your adventures with your friends online. If you live an active lifestyle, you are going to enjoy using AllSport GPS.

iPhone GPS apps keep getting better and better. iGo My Way 2009 is an innovative GPS application for iPhone that provides you with the directions you need to get to your destination without having to rely on a standalone GPS unit. Similar to other top GPS apps for iPhone, iGo provides you with beautiful 3D maps to help you find your way around more easily. So whether you are in Canada or the U.S., you can always rely on these 3D maps to get yourself out of tricky situations.

Unlike a few other top GPS applications, you won’t have to worry about map updates until the end of 2010. So that should give you plenty of time to enjoy your app without paying for updates. I found the app to be very easy to work with. Entering an address and following directions on the map is very easy. The voice commands were very clear, and the lane assistance feature was a plus. What I like about this app is that you are not reliant on your network connection for directions. Essentially, you still get directions even if you are in a dead zone. The automatic re-route feature works like a charm as well.

I was very impressed with the apps ability to get a satellite lock as quickly as possible. So unlike some other apps on iPhone, you won’t have to wait minutes to get started. I did have a few issues trying to implement multi-routing with this app. The routing capabilities need some work, but overall iGo My Way is a solid choice for anyone looking to dump their old GPS and use their iPhone as their main navigation device. There is a lot to be excited about with the future releases as well. Soon, you will be able to navigate your way to your contacts’ location and stopover support is in the works as well.

iGo My Way is not cheap by any means, but it does turn your iPhone into a super GPS. If you have been thinking about purchasing a GPS recently and don’t want to spend $400 on a new gadget, iGo My Way for iPhone is a sound investment.

I don’t know if you have noticed but top GPS companies such as Garmin and TomTom are struggling to sell those good old GPS units. In reality, the personal navigation device market is never going to be the same when you have a device such as iPhone that can be as effective as any GPS gadget in providing you with the right directions and do a whole lot of more things as well. Add a killer GPS app to your iPhone, and you have everything you need to find your away around your city and get to your destination fast without having to worry about carrying an additional device. Mobile Maps America is one of those apps.

Mobile Maps America is a killer navigation application for iPhone that provides you with accurate information while you are on the road and helps you get to your destination faster. Sygic GPS software turns your iPhone into a turn-by-turn, voice capable GPS that helps you get to your destination without getting lost. I was very impressed with the 3D graphics of this app. It’s as good as what I have seen on my personal GPS gadget and makes it easy to see the streets and follow the directions.

Mobile Maps America comes with maps from Tele Atlas, which are up-to-date, and don’t guide you to a no man’s land (like some other systems though). I love the fact that the directions are provided without interruptions. You can easily add your destination address and choose among your favorite destinations. Just like regular GPS systems, you can review the turn by turn instructions to make sure you are on the right track.

I love the fact that you can choose from the various POIs that are around you and call them up fast. That makes things a whole lot easier. You can also receive calls while you are using this app. With millions of POIs available on this app, you are never going to run out of places to visit.

All in all, Mobile Maps America is one great GPS app to own. It not only support multiple languages but provides you with voice guidance and accurate maps to help you get to your destination fast. With apps like these, who needs a GPS.

Verdict: A+
