The Sharkproject app covers more than 70 different types of sharks. It contains useful information such as names, attributes, and locations around the globe. The pictures included in this app are quite breathtaking. Users are also provided with the latest news on everything sharks. What’s nice about this app is the fact that you get a lot of free content but you also have a chance to buy premium content.

Users can take advantage of this app to report the sharks they have seen. They can also report shark products. The user interface in this app is quite elegant. Searching through all these types of sharks couldn’t be any easier. The app contains more than enough content for those studying sharks. The premium content will set you back $10 though.

Earth-Now visualizes its data sets using color maps. Color-coded legends are provided so you can make better sense of what you are looking out. You have the option to choose from various data maps (including Ozone, Sea Level, Water Vapor, Gravity Field, …). You get a 3D model to rotate and interact with.

Earth-Now looks pretty decent and could prove useful for the students of climate science. We did have trouble opening this on our iPod Touch. It worked fine on our iPhone though. The app is offered for free at the time of this writing.

Math Ref has over 1400+ formulas, figures, and tips to help you with your math problems. It covers basic and advanced math and science courses (including differential equations, probability, physics, and chemistry). The app does have a bunch of useful tools to give you help. You can always search through the content and print what you need. The equations are zoomable which helps.

Math Ref is not a flashy app by any means but you don’t need anything flashy to master math formulas. It lets you take notes, search through formulas, and save some time in the process. What’s not to like?

Mars Images does not have too many options. The user interface is minimal at best. But the app does get you the latest images from the Opportunity -  Mars Exploration Rover. The app shows you a list of images you can go through at your own pace. Images can be opened in full screen. Sharing images with others is pretty easy too.

The app did crash on us a couple of times when trying to grab some of the photos. We did have more success with this on our iPhone 4s. Still, pretty nice app to pick up to keep up with Mars images.

Meteor Shower Guide tells you when you can expect to catch the next meteor shower. The list of upcoming events are included in an easy-to-follow fashion. The alert functionality reminds you about upcoming events so you won’t miss them. Meteor Shower Guide included meteor showers included in the International Meteor Organization and American Meteor Society lists.

As you can see in the above screenshot, this guide shows you relevant information about each event, including peak day/time, moon phase/age, and sun rise/set times. It lets you view meteor showers happening in future years, which is nice. Not a bad tool to have if you want to avoid missing the next meteor shower event.

Comet has a very simple interface. It includes a list of observable comets and has links to popular websites where you can find out more about these objects. Comet calculates the ephemerides for comets. The database included in this app is not static by any means. As long as you have an internet connection, you should be able to update your list.

Comet for iPhone does not have too many bells and whistles but does what it promises well. The developer promises to add a sky chart in a future update to make it easier for users to look for comets in the sky. We would love to see more graphical elements in this tool. Nevertheless, it is a useful tool for anyone into comets and astronomy in general.

As of June 2011, over 500 exoplanets have been identified by the Kepler mission. Exoplanet for iPhone provides you with more information on some of these objects. It includes images, 3D plots, and animations to give users a better understanding of these objects. If you are too obsessed with exoplanets, you can rely on push notifications within this tool to get notified about the newly discovered objects.

Exoplanet is a wonderful tool to get you started with your research about these objects. It contains links to thousands of publications to save you time. Background information and detection methods are covered too. The sky chart feature, which displays the position of the planets in your sky is pretty neat.

One does not have to be a student in astronomy to appreciate Exoplanet. It truly puts things in perspective and gives you a glimpse of the vastness of our universe. Will we ever find life on one of these planets? That is something to be excited about.

DeluxeMoon has a super attractive UI. It is not only nice to look at but is very user friendly too. It can keep you up-to-date with moon phases and parameters. It shows you moonrise, moonset, ecliptic longitude/latitude, current moon age, and much more. This app is a nifty tool to have for those into moon horoscope.

DeluxeMoon saves you time looking up the date of the next moon phase. This tool is GPS-aware and shows you time relevant to your location. Into lunar gardening much? DeluxeMoon has tips for that as well. The developers have done a wonderful job putting this application together. You can use it to make connections on how the moon affects life on our planet.

DeluxeMoon is one of the best looking moon applications around. It contains a ton of useful information and tips on the moon and lunar-related activities. If you have to track the moon for research, your religion, or other purposes, DeluxeMoon can be all you need.

Algebra Touch is like a math board on steroids. It allows you to master basic Algebra by interacting with equations and statements. You can simply rearrange, and cross out numbers and variables by using your fingers. The following topics are covered in this app:

• and much more

Algebra Touch does allow you to view your results on an external display, making this app a great tool for teachers.

Algebra Touch is very responsive and has a dynamic UI. If you are learning Algebra or teaching that class, Algebra Touch can be a very helpful too.

Unlike many other calculator apps available for iPhone, Calcbot’s interface has a decent look and feel to it. It provides you access to basic and advanced functions. Its “live as you type” feature allows you to save time calculating problems on your device. The numbers and buttons are large enough for an old man such as myself to see them easily.

Arguably, the best feature of Calcbot is how it tracks past calculations. It is particularly helpful if you are tackling a long problem (as is usually the case in advanced science and tech classes). Calcbot’s information can be sent via e-mail or reused.

Calcbot is one of the best calculator apps for iPhone that we have tested. It has an intuitive interface, is fast, and can make life easier tackling complex problems. A nice alternative to those good old physical calculators.
