Depending on the course you are taking (or the math topic you are tackling), you are going to know a bunch of formulas to solve the problems thrown your way. Math Ref for iPhone is an handy reference app that brings hundreds of math formulas to your phone.

Math Ref has over 1400+ formulas, figures, and tips to help you with your math problems. It covers basic and advanced math and science courses (including differential equations, probability, physics, and chemistry). The app does have a bunch of useful tools to give you help. You can always search through the content and print what you need. The equations are zoomable which helps.

Math Ref is not a flashy app by any means but you don’t need anything flashy to master math formulas. It lets you take notes, search through formulas, and save some time in the process. What’s not to like?

Getting your young ones started with math does not have to be difficult. It is almost never too early to get your child started with math (the sooner, the better). You just don’t want to bore your children in the process. Math Fact Master is a decent educational tool that gets your young ones familiar with basic math.

Math Fact Master covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It covers numbers sets of 0′s through 12′s. It has multiple modes to get your kid started. The Flashcard mode gives your children practice on specific number sets and operators. The challenge mode tests them on what they have learned. Math Fact Master prepares progress reports for its users. You can export the results by email.

Math Fact Master won’t make your child a genius in math. But it is a nice training tool to pick up to get him/her started with this great science. A pretty nice teaching tool to have handy for parents and teachers.

Educational games such as Mathstronaut can always help. It is a fast paced game that shows your child how basic math operators work.

Mathstronaut has super kid-friendly graphics. It covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The game has 4 levels of difficulty. Players have two ways to play the game. In “Blast Off” mode, correct answers are required to power the spaceship towards an alien planet. In Countdown mode, players need to come up with answers before their time runs out.

Mathstronaut lets teachers and parents keep track of their children’s progress. The problems are not too difficult and can help students master the basics of math. The developers have gone out of their way to make Mathstronaut as student friendly as possible.

Mathstronaut looks attractive and makes learning math fun for young kids. It is a great learning tool for parents to take advantage of.

Algebra may not be the toughest math topics one has to know about but some students do find it a tad bit more difficult to master. Sometimes, the problem is not the science but the way it is taught. Algebra Touch is an innovative Algebra training application that helps users get a better sense of what this math science is all about.

Algebra Touch is like a math board on steroids. It allows you to master basic Algebra by interacting with equations and statements. You can simply rearrange, and cross out numbers and variables by using your fingers. The following topics are covered in this app:

Simplification

Operations and their order

Factorization

Prime numbers

Equations

and much more

Algebra Touch does allow you to view your results on an external display, making this app a great tool for teachers.

Algebra Touch is very responsive and has a dynamic UI. If you are learning Algebra or teaching that class, Algebra Touch can be a very helpful too.

Who needs a dedicated calculator these days when we can download powerful iPhone calculator apps to get the job done. Not having to carry yet another device on the move makes picking up calculator apps for iPhone a pretty tempting option. Calcbot is not your average calculator app. It not only has the looks, it keeps track of your past calculations and saves you time tackling complex problems.

Unlike many other calculator apps available for iPhone, Calcbot’s interface has a decent look and feel to it. It provides you access to basic and advanced functions. Its “live as you type” feature allows you to save time calculating problems on your device. The numbers and buttons are large enough for an old man such as myself to see them easily.

Arguably, the best feature of Calcbot is how it tracks past calculations. It is particularly helpful if you are tackling a long problem (as is usually the case in advanced science and tech classes). Calcbot’s information can be sent via e-mail or reused.

Calcbot is one of the best calculator apps for iPhone that we have tested. It has an intuitive interface, is fast, and can make life easier tackling complex problems. A nice alternative to those good old physical calculators.

One does not need to be a genius to know some math tricks. A lot of people assume that those who can calculate numbers in their heads fast are very special. Let’s say that is the case. You can become special too with Math Tricks for iPhone. It’s a trick application that teaches you how to calculate large numbers in your head without breaking a sweat. These tricks can not only save you time in real life, they can impress your friends and colleagues too.

Math Tricks goes beyond simple 25 * 25 tricks. It teaches you how to square numbers in the 50s, those in the 90s, and multiplying all kinds of numbers faster. It has easy to follow instructions that do not confuse you no matter how bad you are in math.

I like the fact that users can test themselves to see if they have learned the lessons. If you have not tried these types of math tricks in the past, it may take you a bit to grasp and master these. The quizzes should help you do that faster.

Here are just a few things you can learn from Math Tricks:

how to square numbers in the 50s, 40s, and 90s

how to multiply numbers by 9 and 99

how to divide any number by 5

learn to multiple 2 numbers ending in 5 (a pair 10 or 20 apart)

much more

I would love to have a way to challenge others in this app and put my time against others when it comes to calculating big numbers. Still, this is one awesome time killer of an app that makes you smarter too.

Many folks find Math to be scary for one reason or another. In reality, every child needs to be familiarized with math early on. Practicing simple math problems can help keep your mind sharp too. Mathlete is a fun iPhone app that can come handy in both situations. It can help you motivate your children to learn math. It can also act as a brain workout for adults.

Mathlete brings a sense of competition to your math workout. You can compete against friends using Game Center. The game has 4 levels of difficulty, so you won’t get 2 + 2 questions all the time.

Support for Game Center adds a whole new dimension to this game. Competing against others can motivate you and your young ones to tackle math problems more often. It would be nice if the game were more social media friendly.

Mathlete won’t make you a math wizard. But it does include fun, simple math problems for you to tackle when you have some down time. It’s great for kids too. Math is not too scary if you spend some time playing with it.

Rating: 8.5/10

There are plenty of note and editor apps available for iPhone. Unfortunately, many of them don’t handle equations that well. TEX equation is a nice editor that has you covered. It can handle all types of equations and lets you add them to your documents without any hassles.

Tex equation lets users enter their equations and preview them on their phone. Once you are done with your equation, you can export its image to your album or copy it for use in other applications. The equation size can be customized too.

TEX equation, which is compatible with iPhone 4, is a must have for those of you who use apps such as Pages heavily. The search functionality is pretty handy too. It is a very helpful app to own if you work with equations often.

Math may not be everybody’s favorite science, but there is no question it can help keep your brain sharp. Math Clock is a cool iPhone application that adds a super cool clock to your iPhone. The hours and minutes are displayed as equations. Math Clock may not give you the easiest way to read time, but it does let you exercise your brain and impress everyone with your clock.

Math Clock has three levels of difficulty. The easy and medium levels can lead to some fairly complex expressions. The advanced level is much more fun (especially if you are into Math).

Math Clock is a universal application and works on both iPad and iPhone. It supports 12/24 modes too. If you have trouble keeping up with the equations, you can always tap to see the answer.

All in all, Math Clock is a wonderful little clock that makes checking time much more fun. It did crash on us a few times. Nevertheless, it’s quite a unique solution and worth checking out for math lovers.
