Leafsnap

By  |

Are you a naturalist? If you are, chances are you spend a lot of time around trees, plants, flowers, and everything in between. Identifying one tree species from another is not always straight forward. The experienced folks in this field can tell trees apart by looking at their leaves and other characteristics. Leafsnap for iPhone takes it to a whole new level. It lets you identify which type of tree you are looking at by analyzing the photo of its leaf.

One does not have to be a genius to realize how great Leafsnap’s potential is. It is pretty easy to use. Just use your phone’s photo to let this tool go to work. Its algorithm, which is designed by facial recognition experts, analyzes each leaf and identifies the species. In some cases, Leafsnap may not be able to recognize your tree based on its leaf. In those cases, it provides you with a list of possible matches.

We would love to see more species covered in Leafsnap. This application does show a lot of promise and can be a wonderful tool for naturalists in the future. At this point, it is not clear whether trees from other countries will be added to its database though.
